On Saturday night we got 56 cm of snow. Yes, over half a meter, which brings Ottawa to within 36 cm of the all-time record of 445 cm in '71-72. A few shots. Here's a collage of a few views of drifts from our back room, and the view out the front door:

We went for a lovely hike around Champlain Lookout, in Gatineau park, yesterday morning, with some friends and their two kids. I took several shots from the lookout, trying to capture the vista, colour, and height. One is a panorama, you can click on it to get a larger version. The other three are the same shot, one processed normally, the other two processed with HDR (high dynamic range) software designed to increase the detail in the highlights and shadows. Which one do you like best?
Last weekend a neighbour called us over to see a swarming mass of red beetles on his manitoba maple. I looked them up in my bug field guide, and identified them as eastern boxelder beetles, not harmful, and prone to massing on warm fall days as they search for a place to over-winter.
And got a nice shot of a dragonfly to boot (a bit over-exposed, but you can see some detail on the eyes):
